Goodness Abounds

“In these times, in these uncertain times,

I will remain open

to the miracle that is each moment.”

 –Jacquie Godden, “In These Times”

(Recording by Elise Witt of “In These Times”)

These beautiful song lyrics have been echoing through my soul this past fall.   Amidst the stream of challenging news–news that the children heard, and wondered about– I have felt the call, over and over, to keep my heart open to that which is birthing anew.  “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” Gandhi said, and as a soul teacher and guide, I know how important it is to model and embody my message…for the children are watching.  Yet holding the energy of a new world, while all around me the old world seems to be falling apart, takes a certain focus and commitment.

I am happy to share with you a helpful resource for staying strong and seeing the bright side in times of challenge:  the book Goodness Abounds.  I am honored to be a co-author of this inspirational anthology, which features one uplifting short story for each day of the year and which transmits the message that no matter how crazy things may seem at times, an abundance of goodness is available to us.

In these times, in these uncertain times, may we all remain open to the miracle that is each moment.  And may we remember that GOODNESS ABOUNDS.

Makayla Halbower, Author of Dyslexia Rules!

By Cynthia Starborn

Last month I attended the EdRev Conference in San Francisco, a one-day event devoted to supporting and celebrating students with learning differences. One of the highlights of my day was meeting Makayla Halbower, who wrote Dyslexia Rules! when she was 8. Now 10, Makayla was sitting at her author’s booth looking very poised and professional, with a neat display of books in front of her.   I opened one book and was quickly drawn into her personal narrative of academic struggles and hard-won triumphs related to dyslexia, as well as her acknowledgment of her friends and her creative gifts.  One of the last lines of her story really struck me:  “I may never be famous, and it’s not always easy, but I am happy to be me.”

Touched by Makayla’s message, I quickly bought a book and asked for her autograph.

After Makayla had signed her name, I asked her what inspired her to write the book.  She said, “I heard of another girl that wrote a book, and I thought that was fun.” Then she added, “I was struggling at the time, and I didn’t want anyone to feel the way I felt.” She said her overall message to her readers was, “Don’t be sad about yourself.”

Next to the copies of Dyslexia Rules! on display at Makayla’s booth, I saw an open box of blank address labels, some colored markers, and a sign that said, “Write something about yourself that you are proud about. Wear it all day.” I looked up and saw that Makayla was wearing a label that said “being a good friend.” I loved her creative way of encouraging people to shift out of any negative “labels” they might have about themselves and to create positive labels instead.   What an engaging way to support people in living out the empowering message of her book!   With a purple pen I wrote “creative writing” on a label and stuck it on my coat.  During the rest of the conference, I enjoyed wearing this label close to my heart, while keeping my eye out for the positive labels being worn by other conference attendees who had clearly been inspired by Makayla’s booth.

If you know any young people with dyslexia, I highly recommend getting them a copy of Dyslexia Rules! by Makayla Halbower.  And no matter what age you are, I highly recommend that you follow Makayla’s example, write a positive label for yourself, and wear it all day, every day.

Announcing the “birth” of 365 Life Shifts!

Co-authored by Cynthia Starborn

“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood….”

I have always loved the poem by Robert Frost, “The Road Less Traveled By.”   It brings back memories of running cross-country races as a teen and hoping, every time I came to a “fork in the road,” that I took the correct path.  In one of my first races ever, a one-mile “fun run” that I ran at age 13 in a local park, I took the lead early on, missed a trail marker, and led almost the entire pack of kids—including some five-and-six year olds—down a path that wound up being twice as long as expected.   Through some sort of amazing serendipity, I somehow wound up crossing the finish line at just the same time as two girls who had walked the entire one-mile loop—the only ones to go the right way because they were so far behind me, they hadn’t seen me turn off on the wrong path!  Somehow the whole experience hit my funny bone just right, and I had a good laugh about it…once I caught my breath.

Later in life, coming to “forks in the road” sometimes felt more daunting.   Unlike in the cross-country races I’d run as a teen, in everyday adult life there weren’t always race maps to study ahead of time, or trail markers to look for once the race began.   Moreover, the consequences of making a wrong turn often felt bigger than just running an extra mile with a lot of little kids behind me.

One such “fork in the road” appeared one fateful night, the spring of my second year in a graduate program in French.  Feeling frustrated and burnt out, I stared long and hard at two different paths that my life could take—and ultimately, by opting for what felt like “the road less traveled by,” I changed my life in a happy way.

To learn more, I encourage you to read my story, “Choosing to Follow My Heart,” which was just published today in the anthology, 365 Life Shifts.

Coming to an unexpected “forks in the road” can be challenging for all of us.  However, I offer you my story, and those of my co-authors of 365 Life Shifts, to support you on your own inspirational path.  May our words bless you, uplift you, and  inspire you to always follow your heart and to always choose “the road less traveled by.”

Love is marching forward…and Love always wins

Saturday, January 21st, 2017

LoveAlwaysWinsDear Soul Friends,

How is 2017 starting out for you?

For many of us here in the US, and around the world,

the current political scene is challenging us to the core.

We must remember that true self-government begins with our power

to inaugurate Love or fear into our hearts in any moment.

And we must affirm, as a law for our reality, that “Love always wins!”

May we allow Love to triumph in all of our moment-to-moment choices.

May we connect with other resonant souls in our communities, our nations, our world.

And together, may we take inspired action to support the co-creation of a world where

“Love always wins!”

Today, many women and men around the world–along with many children and youth–

are marching for the rights of all people.

In this way–and in so many other ways that might not always make the news–

Love IS marching forward.

However you feel called to spend your day, may you affirm, with each step,

“Love always wins!”

Together on the journey,

Cynthia Starborn

365 Moments of Grace: “Divine Timing”

Thursday, July 21st, 2016

Blog Post by Cynthia Starborn

July 21, 2016

Flower background,

As a child, life seemed to unfold on a smooth schedule: new pencils and new school clothes in September, yellow school bus every weekday morning and afternoon, church and Sunday School every weekend, report cards and grade-level promotions in June, long summers filled with the magic of books.

As I grew older, I was sometimes surprised when life events did not always occur so predictably.  Break-ups, births and deaths in the family—these had not been penciled in neatly on the calendar beforehand.

That said, sometimes the unexpected timing of life events brought unexpected gifts.   I found this out in my early 20’s when a teaching job I expected to have in France in September was suddenly cancelled in July.   I grieved deeply; however, my dream of teaching in France ultimately worked out, in a way and at a time that was much better than before.

I describe this serendipitous experience in the story, “Divine Timing: An Unexpected Gift of Grace,” which was published a month ago, on June 21st , in the anthology 365 Moments of Grace. What’s even more serendipitous is that at the time of this book’s publication, I was living out the message of my story once again.

Earlier this year, at the end of January, I received a letter from my landlady announcing that my rent would nearly double as of April 1. I began searching for other apartments, but had a challenging time finding another place that met my needs and felt just right.   When I prayed for guidance on what to do, I received the message to offer to pay my landlady a “compromise rent” for 3 more months, in order to buy myself some more time to look for a new home. I acted upon this message and was able to negotiate staying in my apartment til June 30th.

As of June 1st I still had not found a new place to live; however, acting upon the power of my intuition, I gave my 30-day notice.   As of June 21st, when 365 Moments of Grace was published, I was still searching. A part of me was feeling nervous; however, I told myself that everything would work out in “divine timing,“ just like my story said.

On June 24th, my copies of 365 Moments of Grace arrived from Amazon. I opened up immediately to pp. 272-3—the pages just after my story on p. 270. On p. 272, I read Ana Gordon’s story, “Archangel Michael and the Hand of Grace,” about an experience of divine intervention that led her to full-time work as an intuitive and to daily connection with the archangels ( Right away, I knew that I was being given a message to trust my intuition and to trust that the angels were working on my behalf to help me find a home. Then, on p. 273, I read Marie Spencer-Rowland’s story, “The Universe Really Does Listen,” about suddenly finding an apartment in the U.K. after several weeks of searching ( What an incredible sign for me, that my divine right home was on its way!

On June 26th, I responded to an ad for an in-law apartment that caught my eye on Craigslist. On June 27th, I went to see this apartment, had a good feeling about it, and submitted an application.   On June 28th, two days before I was scheduled to move out, the landlords invited me to sign a lease for the apartment, and I did.

What a gift of divine timing! And, what a gift of grace, to walk through the theme of my story the same month it was published—and to experience the timely inspiration of my fellow co-authors as well.

365 Moments of Grace is definitely a powerful book, filled with living wisdom that readers can open up to at just the perfect time for their journey.

365 MOMENTS OF GRACE: “Dreams DO Come True”

Tuesday, June 21st, 2016

Blog Post by Cynthia Starborn

June 21, 2016

Flower background,

Ever since I was a child, I have dreamed of publishing a book.  When I was in elementary school, my paternal grandfather, who shared my passion for writing, typed my poems and stories on an electric typewriter and bound them into little handmade books, just as he did with his own poems and stories.  When I was in high school,  my dad started creating a family poetry calendar, with a poem for each month of the year, and I quickly became a regular contributor.

Over the years, opportunities to share my creative work with a wider audience started to appear, in the form of newsletters, magazines, newspapers, and blogs.  My reasons for writing have also evolved and expanded, from the simple joy of creation, to the deeper joy of touching people’s hearts and souls, and inspiring more beauty and magic on this planet.

Today, I am honored to share with you that one of my personal narratives, “Divine Timing,” has been published in the anthology, 365 Moments of Grace, almost 8 years to the day after Grandpa Dan passed away.  The family-friendly story I share in this anthology relates to another personal dream I had–about teaching English in France–that took longer than I anticipated to come to fruition, but that ultimately manifested at the perfect time.   While a part of me would like to have been able to show Grandpa Dan this published book while he was still alive, I know he is still watching over me, still cheering me on from the heavenly realms.  I am glad that I will be able to share this book with my dad–and mom!–shortly after Fathers’ Day.  I also hold the intention that whoever reads my story about “Diving Timing,” reads it at the perfect time, and feels supported in their life dreams as well.

Today’s blog on JOY is written in honor of Linda Joy’s launch of

Inspiration for a Woman’s Soul: Cultivating Joy,

available now at

A while back, while observing a special education classroom, I met a very memorable and merry young man on the autistic spectrum. As soon as he walked in the door, Raymundo starting jumping around and shouting for joy.
“Sit down,” his teachers said to him sternly.
Raymundo eventually sat down, but every so often, he would leap out of his seat and start shouting joyfully again.
“Sit down,” his teachers reprimanded him again.
Raymundo sat down for a little while, only to bounce back up with a gleeful shout every few minutes. He reminded me of a jack-in-the-box, popping up with a mirthful squeal no matter how many times the other teachers tried to get him to stay still. And he seemed to be “wound up” by nothing other than the sheer joy of living.
Who’s teaching whom? I started wondering to myself, as I watched with fascination this repeated classroom scene.
Over and over, the adults in the room certainly tried to teach Raymundo to stay still and be quiet, to squash down his happiness in order to fit in society’s conventional box.
Yet Raymundo never tired of trying to teach those around him the beauty of breaking out of that mold and expressing the arms-outstretched, feet-bouncing, richly-voiced merriment of life.
Privately, I shared with another adult that perhaps Raymundo, rather than have a disability, actually had a very special ability to experience joy. She indicated that he needed to learn how to sit still and be quiet like everyone else.
I looked with renewed appreciation at Raymundo. Identified as having special education needs, in a classroom that did not seem to see his special gifts, here he was, like a true master, preaching and living the gospel of joy…totally unfazed about whether anyone else around him“got it” yet or not.
Inspired, I wondered how I might take heed of Raymundo’s message. How many times had I just sat down and stayed quiet “like a good girl,” and put a lid on my happiness? What would happen if I allowed myself to leap to my feet and bubble over with delight?
On the way out the door, I started, ever so slightly, to skip.
Looking back, I saw Raymundo’s eyes twinkle at me, as once again, he jumped for joy.

The Gift of Play on Labor Day

Monday, September 7th, 2015
Happy Labor Day!

I always enjoy the irony of having a national holiday that celebrates work, by not working!  And yet what if enjoyed our life’s calling so much,  that our work was like child’s play?

When I am deeply relaxed and present, everything I do–whether teaching a class, writing, meeting with a client, or connecting with friends and family–becomes a joyful expression of Spirit flowing through me.  Like a child playing with a rubber ducky, I can even find some bubbly joy while doing the dishes!

Of course, I’m not encouraging you to spend all day doing the dishes, or to book yourself so solidly with outer activities that you have no time for a cup of tea.  But whatever your plans for today, let’s join together in starting a new labor movement of joy, where we commit to having fun whatever we do!

Our children will be grateful to us for modeling that

growing up

and going to work,

doesn’t have to mean giving up on play.

To expand your joy this month, feel free to take advantage of some free gifts I am offering you through a new online event called YourDivineBizGifts.

Sign up now and you will have access to a wealth of free gifts–including one by me!–all during the month of September.

To claim your free gifts, click here.

Have a FUN Labor Day…and may every day of labor be FUN!

Dear Soul Friends,

hands_holding_the_earth_picture_165318Today, on Earth Day, may we celebrate all the abundance on this planet.  May we celebrate the abundance of flowers blooming and of birds chirping.  May we honor the abundance of waves in the ocean, and of grains of sand on the beach.  May we delight in the abundance of children’s laughter on a playground, and in the abundance of Love in a loved one’s embrace.

butterfly_on_a_rose_196573It takes courage and conviction to celebrate abundance at a time when many outer signs of scarcity, lack, and challenge seem to be present in our earthly environment.   Yet as creator beings, the more we focus on the vibration of abundance, and notice signs of it, the more abundance we will magnetize to us.  Let us remember that, by the Law of Attraction, we are co-creating the New Earth with our every vibration, thought, word, and action.  May we always choose to co-create  our world from Love and Abundance.

mom_and_baby_boy_in_park_208181If you have children in your life, I invite you to give them an extra hug today.  Many of our children are acutely sensitive to, and worried about, today’s environmental challenges.  Teach the children in your life about the power they have to focus on abundance, so that more of what they truly desire appears in their world, and in this New Earth that we are co-creating together.

magic wand goldenRegardless of whether or not you have children in your outer life, I invite you to give your “inner child” an extra hug today.    A part of you may have feared that your inner child’s joy and magic didn’t work on this planet…but if you stay connected to the vibration of magic, you will see and experience an abundance of miracles here.

May you enjoy infinite beauty and abundance, now and always.  Happy Earth Day!
